How much does it cost to visit Hever Castle in 2026?
An adult pays £25.50 online for a Castle & Gardens ticket and £19.95 for Gardens Only, with under-fives free. Both cost about £2.90 more if you buy at the gate. A private car out from London starts at $411 for the whole vehicle rather than a seat.
What time does Hever Castle open?
The grounds open at 10.30am and the castle itself at noon, in every season the estate runs. Last entry to the castle is between half past three and five depending on the month, and the grounds close between half past four and six. Nothing at all is open between 3 January to 10 February.
Do I need to book these tours in advance?
Yes for a private car, which is a single vehicle on a single day and goes when it goes. Castle admission is a different question: there is no timed entry, so booking online is about the cheaper price rather than a slot. There is no timed entry at Hever, no priority lane and no skip-the-line ticket. Booking online saves money, not a queue.
Can you get to Hever Castle from London without a car?
Yes, by train, and there are two versions of it. Victoria or London Bridge to Edenbridge Town leaves you three miles out and needing a taxi you have booked in advance; Hever station is one stop further and a waymarked mile's walk from the gate, with no taxi rank and nobody on the platform. There is no regular bus service to Hever Castle.
How long do you need at the castle?
The estate asks for at least an hour inside the castle and an hour and a half for the gardens, and the Yew Maze wants half an hour more. Call it four hours to see the place properly and five or six to enjoy it. Anything shorter means choosing between the rooms and the grounds.
Is Hever Castle worth visiting?
If Tudor history or gardens are the reason you are travelling, yes: this is where Anne Boleyn grew up, and the 125 acres around the house were laid out by Joseph Cheal and Son between 1904 and 1908. If you want a fortress rather than a family home, Hever is smaller than its photographs suggest and it is worth knowing that before you set off.
Do the tours include the entrance ticket?
One of them does, and the rest do not. Each card says which, because the difference is roughly the price of two adult tickets on a day out. Where entry is excluded, buy it on the castle's own site before you travel and you pay less than at the gate.
Is parking free?
Yes, parking is free, with accessible spaces. There is more than one car park and staff direct you to whichever is open that day, so a group arriving in two cars cannot be guaranteed the same one. Car parks close fifteen minutes after the last exit from the grounds.
Is the castle wheelchair accessible?
The grounds largely are, on hard-surfaced and shingle paths, and wheelchair hire is available. The castle is a different matter: the ground floor is the only level a wheelchair reaches, and motorised chairs and scooters cannot come into the Courtyard or the building at all. A carer accompanying a disabled visitor is admitted free.
Can you take dogs into the grounds?
Dogs are welcome across the grounds on a lead, the rowing boats included, but not in the castle, the cafes, the shops, the mazes, the play areas or the Festival Theatre. There are water bowls at the Moat Cafe and the Guthrie Pavilion, and a stand in the Castle Courtyard where a dog can be tied while you go inside, though it is not supervised. Registered assistance dogs are welcome everywhere, the castle included.
Was Anne Boleyn actually born at Hever Castle?
She grew up here rather than was born here, and the castle is careful about the distinction. The room presented as the Nursery is where the Boleyn children most likely slept; the long-standing story that it was Anne's own bedroom dates from the seventeenth century and is a myth the estate names as one.
What is the difference between the Castle & Gardens and Gardens Only tickets?
Gardens Only buys you everything outside the moat: 125 acres of gardens, both mazes, the Miniature Model Houses, the Military Museum and the play areas. Castle & Gardens adds the building itself, three floors of it, with the audio guide included. The gap is about five and a half pounds for an adult booking online.
Are these tours refundable?
Most of them refund in full if you cancel at least twenty-four hours before the start time. Two are sold non-refundable, with no change and no refund once confirmed, and both say so beside their own price. Check that line before you book if your dates might move.
Is the castle owned by the National Trust or English Heritage?
Neither. Hever Castle is privately owned. It is not a National Trust property and it is not English Heritage. Membership of those organisations gets you nothing here, although the estate does run partner offers with the RHS, Historic Houses, Gardeners' World, the Armed Forces and Tesco.
What is the best time of year to visit?
June and July for the Rose Garden, which holds over 5,000 rose bushes, and late September to the start of November for Autumn Colour and the Dahlia Border. February and March are the quietest months of the open season and the shortest days of it. Christmas is its own event, running 20 November to 2 January on its own ticket.
Which railway station is closest to Hever Castle?
Hever station is closest at about a mile, but Edenbridge Town is the one most visitors should use. Hever is unmanned, has no taxi rank and no facilities, so the mile is a walk whatever the weather. Edenbridge Town is three miles out and has two local taxi firms the estate names.
Are there taxis at Hever station?
No. Hever station is unmanned and has no rank, and cabs do not wait there. If you want a car at that end you have to book it before you travel, or use Edenbridge Town instead, where the estate recommends booking both legs in advance.
How long is the walk from Hever station to the castle?
About a mile, through open country. It is waymarked with red and white wooden posts, and there is a map on the platform as you leave. Allow twenty-five minutes in dry weather and more after rain, because the last stretch is a lane rather than a pavement.
Is there a bus to Hever Castle?
There is no regular bus service to Hever Castle. That is the single fact that shapes every visit here, and it is why most people arrive by car, by taxi from Edenbridge Town or on a private tour that collects them in London.
How far is Hever Castle from Gatwick Airport?
About thirty minutes by road. Heathrow is roughly an hour, Dover and the Channel Tunnel at Folkestone are about ninety minutes each, and Ebbsfleet International is an hour. Hever is 30 miles from central London.
Can you take a picnic to Hever Castle?
Yes, and the estate encourages it. It names its own best spots: Horse Shoe Lawn, Half Moon Lawn and Two Sisters’ Lawn, the last of those beside the Festival Theatre. There are picnic benches outside the Hever Shop, and anywhere off the Lake Walk works if you want to be further from everyone.
What does the Hever Castle audio guide cover?
The rooms, in the order the route takes them, and it is included in the Castle admission price. It is available in English, French, German, Dutch, Russian and Chinese, with a separate children's version in English. Hearing loops work with it if you ask at the castle entrance.
Can you take photographs inside Hever Castle?
Yes, for private use. The lighting inside is mostly LED spotlights, wall sconces and chandeliers, and a few rooms are kept deliberately dim to protect what is in them. The gardens and the moat are where most people get their best frames anyway.
Can you take a pushchair inside Hever Castle?
No. Pushchairs have to be left in the Courtyard, which is as far as they go, for safety reasons the estate sets out in its access guide. The grounds are a different story and take a pushchair happily on the hard and shingle paths.
How many steps are there inside Hever Castle?
One down from the drawbridge to the Gatehouse and three more to the Courtyard, then one up and down into the Entrance Hall. Inside, thirteen spiral steps reach the middle floor, sixteen more the top, and twenty-six spiral steps bring you back down. Every staircase has a banister rail.
Are the mazes at Hever Castle always open?
Both run weather permitting, so check at the Information Centre when you arrive. Final entry to the Yew Maze is forty-five minutes before the grounds close and final exit fifteen minutes before. The Water Maze has no toilets in that part of the grounds, which is worth knowing with children.
What is the Water Maze at Hever Castle?
A maze of concentric stepping-stone walkways set over water on Sixteen Acre Island. Some stones tilt when you stand on them and hidden jets fire, and the aim is the stone grotto at the centre without getting wet. Few manage it, so bring a towel and shoes that can take it.
Is Hever Castle open at Christmas?
Yes, but as a separate event on a separate ticket, running 20 November to 2 January. The rooms are decorated, there are log fires and a grotto with timed slots, and the day-visit prices and hours do not apply. The estate then closes entirely for 3 January to 10 February.
What is the Capturing a Queen exhibition?
A gathering of portraits identified as Anne Boleyn, more than have been shown together before, running to 2 January 2027 and included with Castle admission. It is staged across the Staircase Gallery, the Book of Hours Room, the Long Gallery, the Council Chamber and a new space in what was the Astor Suite. Visitors vote for the portrait they think is closest to her.
Are the Haunted Hever tours part of a normal day ticket?
No. The After Hours evenings are the castle's own event on three nights in late October, sold separately at forty-two pounds fifty a head, and none of the days we list includes one. They run for fifty minutes with live actors, are recommended for fourteen and over, and are not suitable for wheelchair users.
What is in the Long Gallery at Hever Castle?
Anne of Cleves built it across the full width of the house in the sixteenth century, and it now holds the permanent exhibition: 24 original portraits hung in dynastic order, Henry VI to Henry VIII. The panelling is original; the ceiling is an early twentieth-century reconstruction in Tudor style by Nathaniel Hitch.
Can you do Hever Castle and Chartwell in one day?
Yes, and two of the private cars are built around exactly that: two hours at each and about four hours of driving inside an eight-hour day. Both entrance fees sit outside the fare. It is a full day rather than a relaxed one, and Penshurst Place or Down House can go in the same run if you would rather swap one of them.
