Visiting Hever Castle: Hours, Tickets and Planning Your Day

Three things decide a day at Hever, and only one of them is the ticket. What time the castle itself opens. Which of two railway stations you aim at. And whether you are buying the building as well as the 125 acres around it.

When Hever Castle is open in 2026

The season runs from 11 February to 19 November, then Christmas takes the place over until 2 January, and then the gates shut altogether. There is no visiting at all between 3 January to 10 February.

The 2026 season, as the estate publishes it

Christmas is a separate event on a separate ticket, running 20 November to 2 January with its own hours. Car parks close 15 minutes after the last exit from the grounds.

Why the castle opens at noon and the grounds at half past ten

The grounds open at 10.30am. The castle door does not open until noon, every day of every season. That ninety-minute gap is the single most useful thing to know before you plan a day here.

It is not a problem to solve, it is the shape of the day. Arrive at opening and you have the gardens to yourself while the coach parties are still on the M25; the Italian Garden, the lake and both mazes are all outside the moat and all open from half past ten. Then walk into the castle at noon, when the rooms are still quiet.

What a ticket costs in 2026

These are the estate's own prices for 2 September to 19 November 2026. Booking online saves an adult about £2.90 on the combined ticket.

Hever Castle admission, published by the estate

A family ticket covers two adults with up to three children, or one adult with up to four. There is no timed entry at Hever, no priority lane and no skip-the-line ticket. Booking online saves money, not a queue. There are partner offers with the RHS, Historic Houses, Gardeners’ World, the Armed Forces and Tesco, and they are not valid during the Christmas event.

Castle & Gardens or Gardens Only — which ticket you need

Gardens Only (£19.95 online): the 125 acres outside the moat, both mazes, the Miniature Model Houses, the KSY Military Museum, the play areas and the lake. It is a genuinely full day and the estate itself recommends it to anyone unsure the building will suit them.

Castle & Gardens (£25.50 online): all of that plus three floors of the house, with the audio guide included. If Anne Boleyn is the reason you are travelling, this is the one, because the Books of Hours and the Long Gallery portraits are inside.

What settles it: the noon opening. If your day at Hever is shorter than three hours and starts in the morning, you may not be there when the door opens, and Gardens Only costs less for exactly the thing you will actually see.

How long to allow: castle, gardens and mazes

The estate asks for at least an hour inside the castle and an hour and a half for the gardens, and the Yew Maze wants half an hour beyond that. Four hours on site sees the place; five or six enjoys it.

Under three hours you are choosing, and the choice is usually the rooms or the grounds rather than both. That is worth knowing when you compare a six-hour day from London against an eight-hour one: the difference between them is not the driving, it is whether you get the maze.

Parking, and the car park you are sent to

Parking is free, with accessible spaces. There is more than one car park and staff meet you on arrival to send you to whichever is open that day, so two cars travelling together cannot be guaranteed the same one — agree a meeting point on the estate rather than in a car park. Tell the staff on arrival if you have accessible needs.

Car parks close fifteen minutes after the last exit from the grounds, which on a summer evening is a quarter past six.

Dogs, picnics and what you can bring

Dogs are welcome across the grounds on a lead, the rowing boats included, but not in the castle, the cafes, the shops, the mazes, the play areas or the Festival Theatre. There are water bowls at the Moat Cafe and the Guthrie Pavilion, and a stand in the Castle Courtyard where a dog can be tied while you go inside, unsupervised and at your own risk.

Picnics are welcome and the estate names its own best lawns: Horse Shoe Lawn, Half Moon Lawn and Two Sisters’ Lawn. There are benches outside the Hever Shop, and anywhere off the Lake Walk if you would rather be further from everyone.

If the weather turns

Both mazes run weather permitting, and the Water Maze is a poor idea in the cold whatever the sign says. The castle, the Miniature Model Houses and the Military Museum are all indoors, which is roughly two hours of dry visit if the day goes against you.
