Hever Castle Map: the Estate, the Car Parks and the Stations
125 acres is a long way to walk in the wrong direction. Hever is one estate with five distinct parts, more than one car park, and two railway stations three miles apart that produce completely different arrivals.
Where Hever Castle is, in one line
Hever, Edenbridge, Kent TN8 7NG — three miles south-east of Edenbridge, off the B2026 between Sevenoaks and East Grinstead, and 30 miles from central London. For a satnav that argues, the what3words reference is ///wedge.secret.loves.
The estate in five parts
How the 125 acres are laid out around the castle
| Part of the estate | Where it is | What is in it |
|---|---|---|
| The castle and its moat | The middle of everything | Gatehouse, Courtyard, three floors, the Astor Wing behind |
| The formal gardens | North and east of the castle | Italian Garden, Pompeian Wall, Rose Garden, Tudor Garden, topiary chess set |
| The lake and the Loggia | West, at the far end of the Italian Garden | The 38-acre lake, the Loggia, cascades and grottoes, the Millennium Fountain |
| The mazes and the play areas | Beside the castle forecourt, and on the island | Yew Maze by the forecourt, Water Maze on Sixteen Acre Island |
| The woodland walks | The outer edge of the estate | Anne Boleyn’s Walk, Sunday Walk, Church Gill Walk, the Lake Walk |
Everything above is inside a Gardens Only ticket except the castle itself. The distances are real but not punishing: the Loggia is the furthest point most visitors walk to, and it is about ten minutes from the gatehouse.
The car parks, and the one you are sent to
Parking is free, with accessible spaces, and there is more than one car park. Staff meet you on arrival and direct you to whichever is open that day, which means two cars travelling together cannot be guaranteed the same one.
- Follow the brown signs from the B2026 rather than the satnav’s last two turns.
- Tell the member of staff who meets you if you have accessible needs, before you park.
- Agree a meeting point on the estate, not in a car park, if you are two cars.
- Car parks close fifteen minutes after the last exit from the grounds.
Two stations, three miles apart
Edenbridge Town — trains from Victoria and London Bridge
via Oxted or East Croydon, then three miles by taxi. Book the cab for both legs before
you travel.
Hever — the next stop on the same line, one mile from the castle
on foot, waymarked with red and white posts. Unmanned, no rank, no facilities.
The choice between them is the choice between a fare you have to arrange and fifty minutes of walking. Getting there sets both against the road and against a private car, with times for each.
Walking the estate: distances and surfaces
The main paths are hard-surfaced or shingle and the estate asks wheelchairs and mobility scooters to keep to them. Beyond the formal gardens the walks are grass and woodland and turn soft after rain. The gradient is gentle throughout — this is the Weald, not a hill fort.
Allow ten minutes from the gatehouse to the Loggia, five to the Yew Maze, and rather longer to Sixteen Acre Island if you are going for the Water Maze. The accessibility page has the surfaces in more detail.
Getting your bearings when you arrive
You are handed a map at the entrance, and it carries the opening times for every attraction on the estate as well as the layout — which matters, because the mazes, the museum and the model houses do not all keep the same hours as the grounds.
The Information Hut is the point most events meet at, and the Moat Cafe and the Guthrie Pavilion are the two places to eat. Start at the gardens rather than the castle. The grounds open at 10.30am and the castle at noon, so for the first ninety minutes there is only one direction to go.
The gatehouse is the reference point for everything else. Stand in front of it with the moat behind you and the Yew Maze is to your left, the formal gardens run away to your right, and the path to the lake and the Loggia goes straight on. The woodland walks branch off that path rather than starting anywhere near the entrance, which is why they stay quiet on a busy day.
Toilets are near the entrance, at the Guthrie Pavilion and by the play areas, and there are none at all on Sixteen Acre Island. That is the single most useful thing to know before you send a child into the Water Maze.
A driver who has parked here before
Every fare below is door to door, which takes the car park, the signage and the last two turns off your list entirely.
- Hever Castle opening times and directions — the postcode, the roads, the stations and the car parks
- Hever Castle & Gardens — the estate map and the visitor information hut
The estate publishes an updated visitor map each season. Pick one up at the entrance; it carries the opening times for every attraction on the site.
The tours to Hever Castle from London take the navigation out of the day altogether, and Hever Castle Tours sets out which of them collects you where.
