Hever Castle Weather, Month by Month
Hever is an outdoor attraction with a building in the middle of it, and the calendar changes more here than the thermometer does. The season has a hole in it, the hours move three times, and the thing most people come for is a flower.
What the weather does to a visit here
Three consequences, in order of how much they will cost you.
The season itself. Hever is not open all year. Day visiting runs 11 February to 19 November; Christmas takes over until 2 January, and then the gates shut until February. Turning up in the last week of January is the single most expensive mistake available here.
The hours. They step three times a season. From 28 March to 25 October the grounds close at 6pm; outside that window they close at 4.30pm, which takes ninety minutes off your day and moves the castle’s last entry to 3.30pm.
The mazes. Both run weather permitting, and the Water Maze is a miserable idea in the cold whatever the sign says. Final entry to the Yew Maze is 45 minutes before the grounds close, which in November is quarter to four.
Hever Castle month by month
January
Closed. The estate shuts to day visitors on 2 January and does not reopen until 11 February. Nothing is open, including the gardens. If January is your only window, Hever is not the castle for it.
February
The season opens on the 11th, with the grounds from 10.30am and the castle from noon. Snowdrops and crocus are the reason to come. Last exit is 4.30pm, so the usable day is short and the light goes early.
March
Daffodils, then camellias against the walls. Hours stay short until the 27th, when the season steps up to a 6pm close. Expect cold on the exposed walk up from the car park and mud on the woodland walks.
April
The long season starts: grounds until 6pm, castle until 5.45pm. Tulips fill the beds and the rhododendrons begin. This is the first month the mazes are reliably worth doing, and the first with real warmth in the Italian Garden.
May
Wisteria, azaleas and the last of the tulips, with the herbaceous border coming up behind them. Long days and a full timetable. Bank holidays are the busiest days of the first half of the year, so aim at the opening hour.
June
The roses start. Over 5,000 bushes in the Rose Garden, and the Mediterranean planting along the Pompeian Wall coming into its own. Longest days of the year and the castle open six hours a day. Book the car park journey early.
July
The peak. The Rose Garden is at its best in the first three weeks and the Water Maze finally makes sense in the heat. Bring a towel, and be at the gardens for 10.30am if you want them quiet.
August
Warm, busy and green. School holidays fill the play areas and the mazes, which is exactly what they are there for. The gardens are past the roses and before the dahlias, so this is the month for the lake and the woodland walks.
September
Roses fade, dahlias arrive, and the Autumn Craft Fair runs from the 10th to the 13th. Autumn Colour opens on the 28th. Warm enough for the boats and cool enough for the walks; the best all-round month here.
October
The Dahlia Border and the turning trees, with the Katsura smelling of toffee. Hours drop back on the 26th to a 4.30pm close. Haunted Hever runs on the 29th, 30th and 31st, sold separately by the castle.
November
The season ends on the 19th, and from the 4th the estate opens Wednesday to Sunday only. The Christmas Fair is on the 6th. Christmas at Hever takes over from the 20th on its own ticket and its own hours.
December
Christmas only: decorated rooms, log fires, a Tudor Christmas in the Boleyn apartment and a Father Christmas grotto on timed slots. Day-visit prices do not apply and pre-booking is essential.
The seasons, and which one you want
Spring, February to May. Bulbs, then blossom, then wisteria. Short hours in February and March, full hours from the end of March. The quietest months of the open season.
Summer, June to August. The roses, the longest days and the Water Maze working as intended. Also the busiest, particularly the school holidays and the bank holiday weekends.
Autumn, September to mid-November. The Dahlia Border, the trees and a dated programme of talks. Cooler, quieter than summer, and the best light on the moat. The hours drop on 26 October.
Winter. Six weeks of Christmas on a separate ticket, and then nothing. The what’s on page has the dates.
Best time of day
Half past ten, at opening. The gardens are yours for ninety minutes before the castle door opens, and the castle is busiest in the morning and early afternoon — which means walking in at noon puts you slightly ahead of the crowd rather than in it.
The moat photographs best in late afternoon, when the light comes across the water rather than down onto it. In summer that is well within opening hours; in February it is after the gates have shut.
