Why autumn is the season Hever is built for
The gardens were laid out between 1904 and 1908 by Joseph Cheal and Son, and whoever chose the planting was thinking about October. The Dahlia Border peaks in early autumn. The Katsura tree smells of toffee as its leaves turn. The redwoods and the yew topiary carry the structure once the flowers have gone.
It is also the quietest good month. Summer brings the roses and the school holidays together; autumn brings colour and space, and the moat photographs better in low light than it does at noon in July.
What exactly is Autumn Colour?
A dated event running 28 September to 1 November 2026, daily from half past ten to half past five, and included with your ordinary admission. You collect a map on arrival, or download one before you travel, and follow seasonal routes through the grounds at your own pace.
It is not a ticketed attraction inside the attraction. It is the estate signposting what is at its best that week, which is a more useful thing for a garden to do than another marquee.
What is dated inside it?
A programme of talks and workshops, every one included with admission:
- Steve Edney on dahlias — presentation and tour, 7 October at 2pm and 8 October at 11.30am, from the Festival Theatre and the Dahlia Border.
- Tony Kirkham MBE, former Head of Arboretum, Gardens and Horticultural Services at Kew — talk and tour, 14 October at 11.30am and 2pm at the Guthrie Pavilion.
- Fun with Fungi with RHS Gold Medal winners the Caley Brothers — 15 and 16 October at 11.30am and 2pm, outside the Hever Shop.
- Forest Bathing question and answer sessions — 29 and 30 September at 11.30am and 2pm, meeting at the Information Hut, about thirty minutes each.
- Sustainable autumn crafts with Cultivate Life — 3, 4, 10 and 11 October, 11am to 4pm at the Think Tank.
When exactly does the colour peak?
The Dahlia Border is at its best from late September into mid-October. The trees turn through October, with the Katsura among the first and the redwoods holding on longest. Late roses often carry into the first week or two of the dahlias.
If you want one date, take the second week of October: the dahlias are still going, the trees have turned, the hours have not yet dropped, and the half-term crowds have not arrived. The gardens page names what is where.
What changes on 26 October?
The hours. From 28 March to 25 October the grounds close at 6pm and the castle at 5.45pm. From 26 October they close at 4.30pm and 4.15pm, and the last castle entry moves back to 3.30pm.
That is ninety minutes off your day, and it moves the Yew Maze's final entry — 45 minutes before the grounds close — to quarter to four. If you are travelling from London, the difference between a late-October visit and a mid-October one costs you most of an afternoon.

What else is on in the autumn?
The Autumn Craft Fair runs 10 to 13 September, from half past nine to half past five on the first three days and to half past four on the last, included with admission. The Falconry Experience runs on selected dates from 3 September to 19 November at £66.95 a head, which includes gardens admission.

Are the Haunted Hever evenings part of a day ticket?
No. After Hours: Haunted Hever Castle Tours run on 29, 30 and 31 October 2026, hourly from 5.30pm to 8.30pm, at £42.50 a head plus booking fee. They are the castle's own event, sold by the castle, and none of the days we list includes one.
They are fifty minutes, capped at twenty guests, recommended for fourteen and over, and include a welcome drink in the Moat Cafe. There is a short outdoor section and steep stairs, so they are not suitable for wheelchair users. Book them directly with the estate.
What happens at half term?
Halloween half-term activities run in the grounds, including face painting on a first-come basis with a timeslot booked with the face painter and paid for in the Courtyard Shop. It is the busiest week of the autumn and it is also the week the hours drop.

What should you wear and bring?
The formal paths are hard-surfaced or shingle. The woodland walks — Sunday Walk, Church Gill Walk, Anne Boleyn's Walk — are neither, and after October rain they are properly soft. Bring boots rather than trainers if you want to walk them.
The Water Maze technically runs weather permitting all year, and you should leave it alone in October whatever the sign says. The castle, the Miniature Model Houses and the military museum are the indoor options if the day turns.
When does Hever actually close?
The day-visit season ends on 19 November, and from 4 November the estate opens Wednesday to Sunday only. The Hever Christmas Fair fills 6 November for a single day, half past ten to half past three, with three pounds of every ticket going to Hever Primary School and St Peter's Church.
Christmas at Hever then runs 20 November to 2 January on its own ticket, with decorated rooms, log fires, a Tudor Christmas in the Boleyn apartment and a Father Christmas grotto on timed slots. After that the estate shuts entirely for 3 January to 10 February.
How busy does it get?
Come in early September and you will have it quiet: the school holidays have ended and Autumn Colour has not started. The last week of October is the busiest of the season, because half term and Halloween land together.
Weekdays through October are your sweet spot. The car parks are large, free and rarely full outside half term, and the castle route is one-way, so the queue that matters builds at the entrance around noon rather than spreading through the house.
What is the castle like in autumn?
You will find it quieter, and better lit. The building keeps the same hours as the season around it — noon to 5.45pm until 25 October, then noon to 4.15pm — and the crowds thin markedly once the school holidays end in early September.
Capturing a Queen is the reason to be inside in 2026. It runs across five rooms including the Long Gallery and the Book of Hours Room, and it is included with Castle & Gardens admission. Allow ninety minutes rather than the hour the estate suggests. The castle page has the route.
Autumn is also the one season when the indoor half of Hever earns its keep. If the weather turns, the castle, the Miniature Model Houses and the KSY Military Museum are about two hours of dry visit between them.
Where is the best autumn colour on the estate?
Four places, and if you have one afternoon you should spend it on these. They peak at slightly different points.
- The Dahlia Border — late September into mid-October, and the reason the estate dates the event when it does.
- Anne Boleyn’s Walk — a collection of trees planted more than a century ago, and the best single stretch for turning leaves.
- The Katsura — worth finding for the smell rather than the colour. Toffee, genuinely.
- The Lake Walk — the reflections do most of the work here, and the light comes across the water in the afternoon rather than down onto it.
