What a castle nobody has heard of is doing thirty miles from London
Hever is the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, and it is the reason England has its own church. The Boleyns bought it in 1462; Henry VIII came courting; the break with Rome followed. Then it passed to Anne of Cleves, and then through nine more families until it was almost a ruin.
What saved it was an American. William Waldorf Astor bought it in 1903 and put 748 men on the building and 800 more on digging a lake. The history page has the whole sequence, and it is better company on the drive out than a phone.
Six hours, and what the arithmetic of that means
Thirty miles each way is about ninety minutes of Kent in ordinary traffic. Take three hours off a six-hour day and the remainder is your time on the estate, which is enough for the castle and the formal gardens but not for the far side of the lake.
Two published figures disagree here: a six-hour day, and a five-hour stop at the castle. Both cannot be right for a sixty-mile round trip. Rather than pick the one that sells better, this page prints neither as a spec row. Confirm the shape of the day with the operator when you book.
