The short answer
Most people should buy Castle & Gardens. It is five and a half pounds more for an adult booking online, and what it adds is the only part of Hever that cannot be seen from outside.
But Gardens Only is not the consolation ticket, and two kinds of visitor should genuinely prefer it. If your window at Hever is under three hours and starts in the morning, the castle will still be shut for part of it. And if the stairs inside are a problem, the estate itself suggests the cheaper ticket.

The case for Castle & Gardens
Everything that makes Hever different from a good garden is inside the moat. The Books of Hours carry Anne Boleyn's own signature. The Long Gallery hangs 24 original portraits hung in dynastic order, Henry VI to Henry VIII. The Gatehouse still has its 1383 garderobe over the water.
Five and a half pounds is also less than most visitors spend on lunch, and the audio guide is inside it. You have travelled thirty miles from London to get here. The marginal cost of the reason you came is small.
The case for Gardens Only
125 acres laid out between 1904 and 1908 is a proper afternoon on its own. The Italian Garden with Astor's Roman statuary. The Loggia over the lake. over 5,000 rose bushes in the Rose Garden, the topiary chess set, three woodland walks and both mazes.
With children it is arguably the better ticket. The play areas, the model houses, the boats and the Water Maze are all in it. The castle is the one part of the estate that will not take a pushchair past the Courtyard, and the things-to-do page lists everything a Gardens Only ticket already covers.
The noon opening, which decides it for a lot of people
The grounds open at 10.30am and the castle at noon. If you arrive at opening and have to leave by one, you have ninety minutes of gardens and perhaps forty minutes of castle, and the estate asks for a full hour inside.
That is the arithmetic to run before you spend the extra. On a short morning the building is not really available to you, and Gardens Only is the accurate ticket rather than the cheap one. The visiting page has the last-entry times, which move three times a season.
Do both: how the day fits together
- 10.30am — the Italian Garden, the Loggia and the lake while they are empty.
- noon — walk into the castle as it opens, ahead of the afternoon.
- Early afternoon — lunch, then the Yew Maze before its own final entry.
- Late afternoon — the woodland walks and the best light on the moat.
That is about five hours, which is the day both tickets are designed around, and it means checking how long a tour actually leaves you on site rather than how long it lasts.
The third option nobody mentions
Annual membership costs about £66.55 online for a Gardens Only adult. It buys free daytime entry for a year, priority booking on selected events, and ten per cent off the shops and cafes. Against a £19.95 day ticket that is three and a third visits.
For most people reading this it is irrelevant, because you are coming once. If you live within an hour of Edenbridge it is the cheapest ticket on the list by some distance. The same goes if you are the kind of visitor who comes back for the roses in July and the dahlias in October.
What the two tickets cost a family
The gap widens with the party. Two adults and two children pay about £79.10 for Castle & Gardens online, or £64.90 for Gardens Only. The family rate narrows it again, to £66.60 against £54.65 — about twelve pounds for the whole group.
Twelve pounds is a smaller number than five and a half sounds like it should scale to. That is worth knowing if you have been doing the arithmetic per head. A family ticket covers two adults with up to three children, or one adult with up to four.
One thing neither ticket includes
The After Hours evenings in late October are the castle's own event, sold separately at £42.50 a head, and neither day ticket covers them. The same is true of the Christmas event, which runs 20 November to 2 January on its own ticket with its own hours.
What both day tickets do include, and it surprises people, is everything dated in the main season. Capturing a Queen, Autumn Colour and the Autumn Craft Fair are all inside the price of ordinary admission. The what's-on page has the 2026 calendar, and says which of them cost extra.
What happens if you change your mind on the day
You can upgrade. If you arrive with a Gardens Only ticket and decide the building is worth it after all, the estate will take the difference at the desk — and it is the one time paying on entry is not a mistake, because you have already had the online discount on the first ticket.
It works the other way round too, though not as a refund. If the castle queue is long at noon, the gardens are yours for the rest of the afternoon and the last castle entry is hours away. The route inside is one-way and the crowd builds at the start of it, so waiting is usually cheaper than queuing.
The verdict, by visitor
- Here for the Tudors: Castle & Gardens, and allow ninety minutes inside.
- Here for the gardens: Gardens Only, and time the visit to June, July or October instead of paying more.
- With small children: Gardens Only is a full day and takes the pushchair.
- Short window, morning arrival: Gardens Only, because the building will not be open for enough of it.
- Stairs are a problem: Gardens Only, and look at the Gatehouse from the Courtyard first — the accessibility page counts every step.
